INTERNET SAFETY FOR STUDENTS
Technology has revolutionized the way our young people communicate. Cell phones, live video gaming, and other methods to stay in touch are vastly different than even ten years ago. Unfortunately, the new world of online socializing has a very dark side and families can have a difficult time to keep up with the changing pace.
Chat rooms, instant messaging, blogs, e-mail, and message boards offer youths the instant connections they crave as part of their normal, daily lives. But these communication methods have also become breeding grounds for child predators. Because it is difficult for parents to monitor a child’s behavior online, Cyber Council focuses on minimizing risky practices and identifying other unsafe behaviors. Until they know about safe and appropriate Internet practices, children and teens will continue to be at risk of victimization.
During the Cyber Council program, we use the NetSmartz curriculum to provide age appropriate education that children of all ages enjoy and understand. The engaging learning activities teach children what to watch out for online. Class sizes are small to encourage and promote interaction where students ask questions about their online behavior, and gain a clear understanding of safe and unsafe practices.
Training topics include:
- An overview of the Internet: What are their interests? Where do they go online?
- Typical Internet activities: For youth: school /social. For adults: news, stock reports, research.
- Screen name / Email address: What does it say about you?
- Personal information: What is it and what’s the big deal?
- Gossip: Who me?
- Cyberbullying: The Internet is FOREVER!
- Danger zones: Who are you talking to, what are you saying, and how do you know them?
- Copyright: Did you get permission for that?
